According to foreign media reports, South Korean startup Rebellions Inc. launched an artificial intelligence (AI) chip on Monday, which has already won many government contracts because Seoul is seeking a place for local companies in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence industry.
The company’s ATOM chip is South Korea’s latest attempt to challenge global leader NVIDIA in hardware, powering potential revolutionary artificial intelligence technology.

The South Korean AI chip IP startup is valued at $81.4 million
South Korean chip startup Panmnesia has announced the completion of its seed funding round, valuing the company at $81.4 million. Panmnesia focuses on the development of knowledge in the Compute Express Link technology sector. CEO Myoungsoo Jung stated that chip design software manufacturers like NeoSilica and Kaiden Electronics might be interested in the company’s technology, although both of these companies declined to comment. The investment round was led by Daekyo Investment.

Challenging NVIDIA
The CEO of Sapeon, a California-based South Korean artificial intelligence chip startup, told CNBC that the company is in the midst of a funding round with a valuation exceeding $400 million.
This startup has received support from major Korean companies such as SK Telecom, semiconductor manufacturer SK Hynix, and SK Square, an investment firm spun off from SK Telecom.
Sapeon designs AI semiconductors for data centers, particularly those operated by cloud computing companies. These AI chips are essential for applications that require substantial data processing.
Currently, the American company NVIDIA dominates this market. However, some established players like AMD and startups like Sapeon are seeking to challenge NVIDIA.
“Thanks to the growth of artificial intelligence services like ChatGPT, AI solutions are set to expand significantly,” said Soojung Ryu, CEO of Sapeon, in an interview with CNBC at the World Mobile Communications Congress aired on Wednesday.
ChatGPT is a viral chatbot developed by OpenAI, causing a stir in the tech industry, with giants from Google to China’s Baidu rushing to release their own competitors. Tech industry executives have noted that ChatGPT has pushed AI applications into the market.

Aiming to surpass Qualcomm
Rebellions gained significant recognition in the field of artificial intelligence technology in April of this year when it outperformed more powerful competitors in chip performance testing, specifically in MLPerf.
In the latest MLPerf tests, Rebellions’ AI chip, ATOM, demonstrated the best performance, establishing itself as the fastest in handling large language and visual models.
ATOM’s processing speed is 3.4 times faster than comparable chips from Qualcomm Technologies Inc. and Nvidia Corp. This means that ChatGPT running on a computer equipped with ATOM can provide users with the fastest responses.
Unlike general-purpose system chips like Central Processing Units (CPUs) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), Rebellions’ ATOM and other AI chips are integrated circuits designed to run machine learning programs, a crucial function for creating chatbots.
Rebellions are part of KT Corp.’s South Korean “AI Full Stack” service provider, which offers AI infrastructure such as AI chips, cloud services, and other applications.
