Any users of Debian 12 or Debian 11 should now update their systems to the latest point releases—Debian 12.2 and Debian 11.8. No need for a full upgrade, just install all available updates. The primary purpose of point releases is to create images containing all the latest updates, which can help you save time installing a new Debian version.

Please note that these point releases do not make significant changes to Debian; they are merely for the convenience of users installing Debian. If you have old Debian installation media, such as Debian 12. x or Debian 11. x, there’s no need to discard it. You’ll need to install more updates, but it won’t take too long.

Debian 12.2’s updated packages include Calibre, ClamAV, Electrum, Linux kernel, MariaDB, OpenSSL, and more.

You can find the full list of updates for Debian 12.2 and Debian 11.8 here.

Debian 12 and 11 were released on June 10, 2023, and August 14, 2021, respectively. Both these versions, including Long Term Support (LTS), will receive five years of support.

Unless there are specific reasons, such as certain software dependencies, it’s advisable to use Debian 12 over Debian 11. Unlike Ubuntu based on Debian Unstable, the stable version of Debian undergoes rigorous testing, resulting in a better user experience.

One drawback of using this extensively tested software is that Debian often ships with slightly older kernels. If you have older hardware, everything will work fine. However, if you’ve just purchased a brand-new graphics card, you might prefer an operating system with a newer kernel. Debian 11’s kernel is Linux 5.10, while Debian 12’s kernel is Linux 6.1.
