January 16th news, Honghai Group’s subsidiary semiconductor equipment manufacturer – Jingding Precision Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Jingding”) was hacked. The hackers also posted information on Jingding’s official website stating that if Jingding does not want to pay a fee of 1 million US dollars, they will release up to 5TB of customer data.

JingDing Hacked! 5TB Client Data in Jeopardy Unless Ransom Paid

The hackers left a message on Jingding’s official website saying, “Your data has been stolen and encrypted,” and to Jingding’s customers, “If you are a Jingding customer, we have all your personal information. If Jingding does not pay the fee, all your personal information will be made available online for free.”

The hackers also said to Jingding’s employees, “If your management does not contact us, you will lose your job, and all media including BBC, New York Times, Wall Street Journal will inform you that the company no longer exists.”

The hackers claimed that this is the longest-running ransomware alliance plan in global history, with no political motives, just wanting money. If the payment is made, they will provide decryption software and destroy the stolen data.

Regarding the required fee, the hackers warned, “Don’t go to a data recovery company; they are essentially middlemen. They will make money off you and deceive you. We know of some cases where recovery companies tell you the ransom is 5 million dollars, but in reality, they secretly negotiate with us to pay 1 million dollars, so they make 4 million dollars off you. If you contact us directly, you will not have to pay 5 times the fee, just 1 million dollars.”

In response, Jingding also issued a statement today saying that Jingding detected that part of its information system was subjected to a hacker cyberattack. At the time of the incident, the IT department had fully initiated the relevant defense mechanisms and recovery operations, while also collaborating with external information security company experts.

Jingding also pointed out that they have comprehensively and thoroughly scanned all domains (pages) and related files to ensure information security to a high standard, and operations can be restored using daily backup data. The initial assessment suggests no significant impact on company operations.

Records show that Jingding is a subsidiary of Hon Hai Group, mainly engaged in manufacturing and selling subsystems of semiconductor equipment and flat panel display equipment. Based on its ability to manufacture precision components, and applying advanced assembly, electromechanical integration, and automation as its core technologies, Jingding produces high-end precision equipment. It is one of the few semiconductor equipment manufacturers in the industry to achieve vertical integration and is also an important semiconductor listed company in Taiwan, China.
