You will soon be able to use one of the exclusive AI features of Surface on any computer that supports Windows 11. Microsoft revealed that Voice Clarity is coming to all Windows 11 computers equipped with x64 processors, not just those with ARM64 chips.
Voice Clarity is a background function that improves voice quality in real-time during calls. It uses a “low complexity artificial intelligence model” to suppress background noise, eliminate echo, and reduce reverb. However, with the release of Windows 11 Canary Channel build 26040, all users with “traditional” Intel and ARM processors can try out this feature.
Voice Clarity can work at the system level with all applications using communication signal processing modes, including voice chats in many popular games. This means you don’t have to wait for developers to support voice access in their projects to benefit from voice access features. However, application manufacturers can also switch between AI modes of voice communication.
The voice clarity function is part of Windows Studio Effects, a set of enhancements that depend on machine algorithms and require a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit). They include video background effects, eye contact, automatic framing, and voice improvement. Through Windows 11 build 26040, users without an NPU in their PC can try some of these enhanced features.
Microsoft, Qualcomm, AMD, and Intel are vigorously promoting the AI experience of modern PCs. Later this year, customers will have the opportunity to choose from a wave of new computers equipped with dedicated AI processor chips. Microsoft is also expected to release a new version of Windows with “breakthrough” AI features. Some of these will be used on existing computers, while others will only be available on new devices equipped with the latest chips. Rumors also say that 16GB of memory is now the baseline for AI computers.
