According to foreign media “Tom’s Hardware“, citing industry insiders, the NAND package module composed of 4 or 8 NAND Flash chips is in short supply, especially since the price of high-capacity consumer SSDs may rise sharply, and it is expected to appear later this quarter.
According to reports, this type of M.2 2280 SSD carries four 3D NAND packages, mainly 2TB and 4TB capacities. Now these modules have become scarce, and suppliers have raised their prices, which may affect SSD prices in the coming months.
Industry sources pointed out that when the prices of these 2 TB and 4TB SSDs “soar”, the widespread shortage of NAND packages may take two to three months to fully impact the supply chain.
The report stated that there are many reasons for the limited supply of NAND Flash modules, such as the reduction in capacity by manufacturers of 3D NAND Flash memory chips in recent quarters and the slowdown in the transition to higher bit-density nodes.
Despite such media reports, industry insiders told Global Semiconductor Watch that the NAND package has not yet reached a state of supply falling short of demand.
As for the future price trends of NAND Flash and SSDs, Wu Yating, Senior Vice President of Research at TrendForce, previously expected an 18-23% increase in NAND Flash contract prices in the first quarter of 2024.
TrendForce believes that NAND Flash contract prices have been falling since the third quarter of 2022, dropping for four consecutive quarters, until they started rising in the third quarter of 2023. With the market demand outlook for 2024 still conservative, the price trends of both will depend on the capacity utilization rate of suppliers.
Regarding SSD prices, TrendForce previously stated that while North American CSP purchase demands have not grown, there is support from orders from Chinese CSPs and server brand businesses. The demand for Enterprise SSDs in the first quarter of 2024 shows a seasonally weak but not weak market. Overall, buyers continue to expand orders to build secure inventory levels, leading to a more assertive negotiating attitude from suppliers in the first quarter, driving an approximate 18-23% increase in Enterprise SSD contract prices for the season.
