SK Hynix, a valuable contributor to the semiconductor industry, is setting its sights high with a plan to invest a hefty $1.5 billion this year to acquire 8 advanced Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines.

Currently, SK Hynix possesses 5 EUV machines. The acquisition of the new machines will significantly boost this number, supporting the company’s shift to fifth-generation DRAM factories. This move is vital for SK Hynix to stay competitive in the fast-paced market.

In 2021, SK Hynix wisely began using EUV technology, a significant leap in their manufacturing abilities. If the plan to buy 8 more machines goes through this year, the company will boast a total of 13 cutting-edge EUV devices. The purchase of these EUV machines forms about 40% of this year’s total investment.

EUV technology has become an essential manufacturing tool since its introduction to the fourth-generation DRAM (1a) production line. Last year, SK Hynix completed the development of the 10nm fifth-generation (1b) DRAM process. To underscore the effectiveness of EUV technology, the company is planning to expand its usage.

SK Hynix’s Wuxi factory, responsible for a considerable 40% of overall DRAM production, is currently shifting to the fourth-generation DRAM production line. This shift calls for the use of these advanced machines to ensure optimal production.

However, importing the required equipment into China is a considerable challenge. In response, SK Hynix has devised a clever workaround. They’ve planned to air transport the wafers back to Korea for the necessary EUV equipment adjustments this year, demonstrating their determination and flexibility in overcoming obstacles.
