Microsoft will officially end support for the Microsoft Windows 10 21H2 Enterprise and Education editions on June 10, 2024. After that, users still running 21H2 will not be able to obtain official support from Microsoft, nor will they be able to receive security or error patching.
Although these users can also upgrade to Windows 10 22H2, when contacting Microsoft, they will be guided to upgrade to Windows 11.
Support for Windows 10 21H2 Home and Pro editions already ended on June 13, 2023. Users who do not wish to upgrade to Windows 11 can always upgrade to Windows 10 22H2, but support will also end on October 14, 2025.
Microsoft has already forcibly rolled out Windows 11 23H2 for any users still using Windows 10 and older versions of Windows 11 21H2 and 22H2.
This end-of-life cycle notice affects all the following Windows 10 versions:
- Windows 10 Enterprise, version 21H2
- Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session, version 21H2
- Windows 10 Education, version 21H2
- Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, version 21H2
For some businesses and educational institutions, upgrading to Windows 11 may pose challenges due to specific hardware requirements. The requirements for Windows 11 Enterprise and Education editions are lower but still require UEFI, Secure Boot, DX12 compatible graphics, and TPM 2.0. The last requirement could be a hurdle for systems older than five years.
Larger institutions typically have service and upgrade contracts and will upgrade systems as needed. Upgrading to Windows 10 22H2 should be relatively straightforward as its requirements are the same as 21H2, but this only postpones the end of support date by one year. However, if these users need continuous updates and patches, Microsoft offers an annual subscription for Windows 10 extended updates. IoT devices using Windows can also be upgraded to Windows 11.
Microsoft will end support for all Windows 10 versions in 2025, including Windows 11 versions 21H2 and 22H2. Windows 10, already 9 years old, will exit the historical stage after a 10-year run, before ending regular support next year.
