Mentioning “Denuvo,” many gamers are certainly familiar with this common and popular anti-cheat and anti-piracy solution for games. It encrypts and verifies the software while the game is running to ensure that only legally purchased games can operate normally.
However, over the years, Denuvo has stirred some controversies among the gaming community. Some games that incorporate Denuvo experience noticeable performance degradation, becoming laggy. Denuvo’s reputation in this area has been quite poor, even notorious.
So, why bring up Denuvo now? On March 18, Irdeto, Denuvo’s parent company, made a significant move by introducing a new watermarking technology called TraceMark. This technology can easily track and identify insiders who leak confidential content.
TraceMark is not aimed at or applicable to the end gamers but targets all development and testing phases before the official release of a game, including the beta testing stage.
The solution ensures that all game copies and sensitive content are not leaked during this time. If a leak occurs, it can be easily traced and identified who is responsible.
TraceMark is a cross-platform solution that can run on all major gaming platforms, including PCs, game consoles, and mobile phones.
Irdeto claims that TraceMark can inject various visible and invisible unique watermarks into game projects without affecting game development and performance. It provides APIs for game developers to generate and detect game watermarks, which they can use freely and flexibly.
Moreover, TraceMark can be integrated with the company’s multiple anti-tampering technologies, offering a “one-stop solution” to prevent unauthorized game copying and content leakage, protecting game developers’ codes from being maliciously altered, cracked, reverse-engineered, and debugged.
Theoretically, TraceMark is a technology for game developers and is unrelated to the wider gaming audience. However, the company previously claimed that Denuvo would not affect game performance, but the reality proved otherwise.
Thus, whether TraceMark will truly not impact the final game performance and user experience, as Irdeto claims, remains to be seen and requires further market validation.
Currently, no mainstream game companies have explicitly stated they will adopt Irdeto’s TraceMark solution. The author will share the latest developments as soon as possible, so stay tuned.
