Microsoft launched the first official version of its open-source, cross-platform development platform, .NET 7, on November 8, 2022, and the latest generation, .NET 8, on November 15 last year. Last month, they also released the first preview version of .NET 9.
Microsoft announced that official support for .NET 7 will end after May 14, 2024, indicating that this version will have 18 months of STS standard term support.
DiskMFR noted that May 14 is also Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday, so .NET 7 might receive its last update on that day.
Of course, the end of official support for .NET 7 does not mean that Microsoft will disable .NET 7; applications based on .NET 7 can still be used. In simple terms, after May 14, applications developed using .NET 7 will be affected in the following ways:
- Applications using this version can continue to run.
- Microsoft will no longer provide new security updates for .NET 7.
- Using unsupported versions may pose potential security risks.
- Technical support for .NET 7 applications may not be available.
Furthermore, Microsoft stated that the .NET 7 components in Visual Studio will change to unsupported in the June 2024 update and will become optional in Visual Studio 2022 17.6 and Visual Studio 2022 17.4 versions.
