On Tuesday local time this week, Arm CEO Rene Haas issued a stern warning, stating that the more information artificial intelligence collects, the smarter it becomes. However, the more information they collect, the more power they need. AI models, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, require a substantial amount of electricity, which could lead to AI data centers consuming 20% to 25% of the United States’ electricity demand by 2030, a significant increase from today’s 4%.
He specifically highlighted that large language models like ChatGPT consume a significant amount of electricity, requiring an “insatiable” amount of power to operate effectively. According to previous reports by DiskMFR, ChatGPT processes over 200 million requests daily, consuming up to 500,000 kilowatt-hours per day. In contrast, the average daily electricity consumption of a typical American household is only 29 kilowatt-hours, meaning ChatGPT’s daily power consumption is more than 17,000 times that of a typical household.
Arm is now focusing on reducing the power consumption of artificial intelligence technologies. With the astonishing increase in power demand, Haas emphasized the challenges of advancing AI research without more efficient energy solutions.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) highlighted this issue in its “Electricity 2024” report, stating that the power consumption of global AI data centers will be ten times that of 2022. Part of the reason is that large language models like ChatGPT require far more electricity than traditional search engines like Google.
Dutch central bank data scientist Alex de Vries calculated in a paper published in the Journal of Sustainable Energy “Joule” that if Google were to apply generative artificial intelligence technology to all its searches, it would consume approximately 29 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, equivalent to the total annual power generation of Kenya, Guatemala, and Croatia.
