According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple will introduce a suite of new AI features with iOS 18 that will operate entirely on-device, eliminating the dependence on cloud servers.
Gurman stated in the Q&A section of his Power On newsletter today: “As the world eagerly awaits the major AI technology Apple will unveil on June 10, it appears that the initial features will operate completely on the device. This means that the large language models supporting these new features will not utilize cloud processing.”
Gurman also noted that Apple might offer some cloud-based AI features in the future, potentially supported by Google’s Gemini or other providers. Reports indicate that Apple has discussed potential generative AI collaborations with Google, OpenAI, and China’s Baidu. Although iOS 18 is not expected to include an Apple-developed chatbot similar to ChatGPT, it is still unclear whether Gemini or other chatbots will be directly integrated into iOS 18.
Some Apple supply chain analysts, such as Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu, have noted that due to Apple’s active procurement of AI servers, the company might introduce some proprietary cloud-based generative AI features in the future.
Rumors suggest that iOS 18 will bring new generative AI capabilities to iPhone’s Spotlight search tool, Siri, Safari, Shortcuts, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Numbers, Pages, and Keynote. Gurman previously reported that generative AI would enhance Siri’s ability to answer complex questions and allow the Messages app to automatically complete sentence inputs.
Apple will announce iOS 18 and other software updates at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will be held from June 10 to June 14.
