At the recent Vision 2024 event, Intel announced a change to the naming convention for the next generation of Xeon processors. The upcoming sixth-generation Xeon processor will be named Xeon 6, including products like Sierra Forest, which features an all-E-Core design, and Granite Rapids, which has an all-P-Core design. Four models and specifications of the Granite Rapids-AP processors have already been revealed.

According to wccftech, these four models are Xeon 6980P, 6979P, 6972P, and 6960P, with 128, 120, 96, and 72 cores respectively. All cores are Redwood Cove, the same P-Cores currently used in the Meteor Lake processors. These Xeon processors have a TDP of 500W and are part of the Xeon Platinum series. Their specifications are as follows:

  • Xeon 6980P: 128 cores / 500W / 2.0~3.2GHz
  • Xeon 6979P: 120 cores / 500W / 2.1~3.2GHz
  • Xeon 6972P: 96 cores / 500W / 2.4~3.5GHz
  • Xeon 6960P: 72 cores / 500W / 2.7~3.8GHz

Considering that Intel’s fifth-generation Xeon processors, Emerald Rapids, have a maximum of 64 cores, Granite Rapids will offer double the number of cores. This matches the maximum core count of AMD’s EPYC Turin, which uses the Zen 5 architecture and is expected to have up to 128 cores, while those using the Zen 5c architecture could have up to 192 cores. These will be countered by Sierra Forest, which utilizes an all-E-Core design with up to 288 cores.

The platform code name for the Xeon 6 processors is Birch Stream, where SP chips will use the LGA 4710 socket, and AP chips will use the larger LGA 7529 socket. Granite Rapids will offer platforms ranging from single to 8-way configurations, supporting up to 12-channel memory, offering 136 PCIe 5.0 lanes, and supporting CXL 2.0. There will be various combinations of chips, including single compute chips, dual compute chips, and up to three compute chip configurations. Intel is expected to release a large number of SKUs, following the launch of Sierra Forest.
