Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, announced on Wednesday that he is starting a new artificial intelligence company.
Amid efforts by some of the largest tech companies to dominate the generative AI boom, the company focuses on creating a safe AI environment.
The company is named Safe Superintelligence, which, according to its website, is a US-based company with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. Sutskever announced in a post on X that he was founding this company.
“We focus on one thing, which means we are not distracted by administrative costs or product cycles, and our business model means safety, security, and progress are not affected by short-term commercial pressures,” the post said.
Joining Sutskever in founding Safe Superintelligence are former OpenAI researcher Daniel Levy and Cue co-founder and former Apple AI chief Daniel Gross.
Last November, during the process of CEO Sam Altman’s dismissal and rehire, Sutskever played a key role and subsequently left Microsoft-backed OpenAI in May. After Altman’s return, Sutskever was removed from the company’s board.
