Recently, we have shared a lot of information about AMD’s new products, including the Ryzen AI 300 series processors that will be officially released on July 15, the Ryzen 9000 series processors that will be officially released on July 31, and several rumored benchmark leaks.

Today, we want to share the latest news about the 800 series motherboards that will be compatible with the Ryzen 9000 series processors.

This is also a very noteworthy issue because the current 600 series motherboards are quite expensive, which has been a major complaint. Many are hoping that the next generation of motherboards will be more affordable.

AMD Naming Convention

Currently, AMD’s mainstream processors are the Ryzen 7000 series, which are compatible with the 600 series chipsets and motherboards.

According to previous naming conventions, AMD’s latest generation of chipsets and motherboards should be the 700 series. However, reliable sources have confirmed that AMD will skip the 700 series and name them the 800 series directly.

What are the highlights of the AMD 800 chipset?

Currently, the known information is very limited, including the following: X870/X870E supports USB 4.0, both graphics card and SSD interfaces support PCIe 5.0, and it supports higher frequency memory.

Is there really an 840 chipset and motherboard?

In previous articles about the 800 series motherboards, we mentioned an 840 chipset and motherboard, which is likely a slightly scaled-down version of the mainstream 850 model.

Some people are skeptical and want to know if this information is credible. Is there really a B840 chipset and motherboard, and how significant are the downgrades?

The answer is yes; this information is essentially confirmed, with multiple sources verifying it. Additionally, the downgrades are not substantial.

The main differences between the B840 and B850 are threefold:

  1. The B840 motherboard uses the Promontory19 chipset, while the B850 motherboard uses the Promontory21 chipset.
  2. The B840 motherboard does not support processor overclocking.
  3. The B840 motherboard does not support PCIe 5.0, only PCIe 4.0.

Release Date of AMD 800 Series Motherboards

Some people might question this: typically, when a processor manufacturer releases new processors, they simultaneously release a new generation of chipsets and motherboards. So, the 800 series motherboards should definitely be released together with the Ryzen 9000 series processors on July 31, right?

If you really think that way, it just shows your inexperience and lack of understanding of the strategies involved.

According to the latest rumors, the high-end models in the 800 series, the X870E and X870 motherboards, will be launched in late September, two months after the Ryzen 9000 series processors are released. As for the B850 and B840 motherboards, their release dates are likely to be even later, with no specific information available yet.

The saying “wearing leather pants over wool pants must have a reason” applies here. AMD’s strategy might seem odd on the surface, but it’s actually quite logical. The current market still has a large inventory of 600 series motherboards, and the next few months will serve as a buffer period to clear out this inventory.

If the 800 series motherboards were also released on July 31, it would significantly impact the sales of the existing 600 series motherboards, causing internal competition. AMD wants to avoid this scenario, so they will delay the launch of the 800 series motherboards.

Therefore, if users purchase Ryzen 9000 series processors between August and September, they will have to buy the existing 600 series motherboards. It is expected that the 600 series motherboards will see a price drop during this period.

Price of AMD 800 Series Motherboards

Of course, what everyone is most concerned about is likely the price of the 800 series motherboards. While there is no reliable information available yet, I can offer some predictions and analysis for your reference.

The B850 motherboard, aimed at mainstream users, is expected to be cheaper than the previous generation B650 motherboard. However, it’s difficult to estimate exactly how much cheaper it will be. For those looking for an even more affordable option, the B840 or B650 motherboards might be worth considering.

Overall, the issue of AMD’s new platform motherboards being expensive is expected to be alleviated to a certain extent in the future, making the prices more acceptable. There’s no need to worry too much about this issue. I will share more updates and relevant information as soon as it becomes available, so stay tuned.
