System Reset vs Reinstall: Why Resetting is Often Better

For Windows users, if faced with difficult system issues, such as occasional crashes during gameplay due to incomplete graphics driver uninstallation, reinstalling the system is often a reliable solution. Although reinstalling isn’t particularly challenging, it does have certain barriers. Here’s an easier alternative: system reset.

With the spread of Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft has provided a “Reset this PC” option under system recovery. This option resembles a system reinstall but is entirely automatic, eliminating the need for users to prepare system images or related tools. You just need a few clicks.

Here’s how to reset your PC:

Open Settings, click System, and then Recovery to find the Reset this PC option. Click Initialize on the right, and the feature activates. You’ll need to choose a reset method and whether to keep your data, based on your needs, with no complicated steps involved. The system will restart automatically and proceed with the reset. Once completed, it will take you to the new system setup screen.

Isn’t it simple? Unlike reinstalling, there’s no need for a USB drive, PE system, or knowledge of entering BIOS or selecting USB boot for various PC or motherboard brands. It’s especially convenient for beginners.

There are two reset options worth noting. First, whether to download the latest image; it’s often unnecessary since you can update the system afterward. Second, whether to keep the original data, which depends on preference. If you’ve already backed up data, a full data wipe can be a cleaner choice.

After reset, you may encounter an issue where the system requires a Microsoft account to continue setup. This is an inconvenience in Windows 11. To bypass it, press Shift+10 to bring up CMD, enter “oobe\bypassnro.cmd,” and hit Enter. The system will restart, allowing you to choose a local account.

Another possible issue is if the account login prompt persists after the reset, without an option to skip network setup. This usually means the system is already connected—either via Ethernet or a saved WiFi password. Simply disconnect from the network, either by unplugging the Ethernet cable or disabling WiFi temporarily, to resolve it.

In short, if reinstalling the system feels cumbersome, using system reset is a recommended alternative. It’s simpler to operate, requires no extra tools, and is much more convenient.
