Many beginners tend to subconsciously add a “future upgrade” requirement when purchasing hardware, but this is actually unnecessary. For most people, unless they’re hardware enthusiasts, they are very likely to buy hardware and, after a period of time, once the initial excitement fades, they stop thinking about upgrading their computer’s hardware. Only those who are constantly involved in the hardware community and participate in various hardware comparisons are the ones who might actually upgrade their hardware in the near future.
Moreover, for some configurations, everything might just fit perfectly, and if they want to upgrade to a higher-end CPU or GPU, they may also need to upgrade the motherboard, power supply, and cooling system, which could significantly increase the budget. All these additions might easily push the total cost beyond the budget.
Additionally, we are still in an era where computer performance is improving significantly, and CPU performance has been rapidly advancing in recent years. Large-capacity memory is also not expensive, so if no new needs arise, the lifespan of a computer can generally exceed 5 years.
After this time, if you consider the so-called “in-place upgrade,” you’ll find that newer processors offer better value for money. So, why bother upgrading? It’s better to just replace the old parts with new ones.
For example, if you bought an i5 8400 platform in 2018, with plans to upgrade to an i7 8700, now that you’re looking to upgrade, you’ll see that a i5 12400F priced around 600 yuan easily outperforms the i7 8700. However, the second-hand price of an i7 8700 is also around 600 yuan, making the upgrade to the 8700 almost pointless. It’s better to just replace both the motherboard and CPU with new ones.
At this point, the extra money spent on upgrading to the 8700 now seems unnecessary.
