Since its launch, the dedicated SSD of the Mac Studio has been difficult to replace due to Apple’s encryption measures, with users only able to replace the NAND flash memory. This limitation has forced many users to resort to using external hard drives via USB-C or Thunderbolt ports as alternatives. However, French company Polysoft recently announced a major breakthrough, successfully reverse-engineering the proprietary SSD storage module of the Apple Mac Studio, enabling users to upgrade storage at a lower cost.
The company plans to begin selling a storage product named Studio Drive in January 2025, offering three capacity options: 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB, priced at 399 euros, 799 euros, and 1099 euros, respectively, about half the cost of Apple’s official storage prices.
Polysoft burned through the components of the original Apple module layer by layer using lasers and scanned the circuits to create a schematic. They then used the same Toshiba and SK Hynix TLC NAND flash memory as Apple to manufacture the storage modules. These modules have been tested and can successfully initialize the system on Mac Studio. In addition, Polysoft is also developing an upgrade solution for the M4 Mac mini SSD.
