Intel SSD Disappears, Solidigm Emerges: What Happened?

When SSDs first emerged, Intel was still a major player, with the X-18M and X-25M receiving high praise. Later, it developed the famous Optane technology and products, but with its strategic shift, Intel has now abandoned its flash memory and SSD business.

In 2020, Intel sold its entire flash memory business to SK Hynix for approximately $9 billion, including the Fab 68 plant in Dalian, which later became Solidigm.

In 2022, Intel directly shut down its Optane business, incurring a loss of $559 million.

Currently, Solidigm’s official website has quietly removed the primary entry for consumer SSD products, leaving only data center SSDs.

The P41 Plus and P44 Pro series are the only two consumer SSDs released by Solidigm after its independence. The product pages are still up, but production actually ceased in October 2024.

Interestingly, Intel’s earlier 670p and 660p SSDs, which were supplied to OEM manufacturers, continued to be supplied after the acquisition and were also completely discontinued in October 2024.

A spokesperson from Solidigm stated that customers were notified last year that the P41 Plus and P44 Pro would be Solidigm’s last consumer SSD products, and future demand should be directed to the parent company SK Hynix. Solidigm will focus on data center SSDs.

There are also reports that Solidigm closed its consumer business as early as October 2023 and laid off some employees.
