OpenAI stated that, in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab, it has shared the first study on how using ChatGPT affects people’s emotional well-being.

The study found that users’ emotional states are influenced by how they interact with AI, their individual emotional needs, and the duration of use.

Through large-scale data analysis and randomized controlled trials, the study revealed the complexity and limitations of emotional use of AI, providing important insights for the responsible development of future AI platforms.

During the investigation, OpenAI analyzed nearly 40 million ChatGPT interactions combined with user surveys to understand real usage patterns.

Meanwhile, together with the MIT Media Lab team, they recruited nearly 1,000 participants for a four-week ChatGPT usage experiment to explore how platform functions and usage types impact users’ psychological states.

Limited emotional interaction: Most ChatGPT conversations did not involve emotional interaction, indicating that emotional use is not mainstream.

Emotional reliance among heavy users: A small group of heavy users (especially those using advanced voice mode) were more likely to view ChatGPT as a “friend” and showed a higher degree of emotional dependence.

Impact of voice mode: Voice mode may enhance users’ well-being in the short term but could have negative effects with long-term use.

Impact of conversation type: Personal conversations (such as emotional expression) may increase feelings of loneliness but reduce emotional dependence; non-personal conversations (such as work discussions) may increase emotional dependence.

Impact of personal factors: Users’ emotional needs, perceptions of AI, and duration of use all significantly affect their emotional well-being.
