I. Preface
In a previous article, I shared a 1080P gaming performance comparison between the GeForce RTX 5060 and the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB. The outcome showed several ties and alternating wins, resulting in an overall deadlock with no clear winner.
This round of testing raises the difficulty, comparing the GeForce RTX 5060 and Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB under 1440P resolution. — Will the result remain a tie, or will one side come out on top? This article will reveal the answer.
II. Test Platform Configuration
Main specifications are as follows:
Processor: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Motherboard: ASRock X670E PG Lightning
Memory: 32GB DDR5 6000MHz
Graphics Cards: GeForce RTX 5060 and Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB
Storage: Two Samsung 970 SSDs
Operating System: Windows 11
IV. Game Testing (RX 9060 XT vs RTX 5060)
Seven games were tested under 1440P quality settings. In the following image comparisons, the left represents the GeForce RTX 5060 platform, and the right represents the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB platform.
Game 1: God of War
GeForce RTX 5060 outperformed with 4 more FPS on average and 4 higher minimum FPS. Frame times were similar. Slight edge to RTX 5060.
Game 2: Cyberpunk 2077 (Ray Tracing On)
GeForce RTX 5060 led significantly with 10 more FPS on average, 18 higher minimum FPS, and 16ms lower frame time. Clear win for RTX 5060.
Game 3: Red Dead Redemption 2
Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB outperformed with 6 more FPS on average, 9 higher minimum FPS, and slightly better frame time. Small win for RX 9060 XT.
Game 4: Ghostwire: Tokyo
Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB led by 12 FPS on average and 13 higher minimum FPS. Frame time was ~2ms lower. Clear win for RX 9060 XT.
Game 5: STALKER 2
GeForce RTX 5060 outperformed by 5 FPS average and minimum, with a 2ms better frame time. Slight win for RTX 5060.
Game 6: Horizon Forbidden West
Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB held a small advantage: 3 more FPS average, 5 more FPS minimum, frame time nearly equal. Slight edge to RX 9060 XT.
Game 7: The Last of Us Part II
Performance nearly identical. RTX 5060 had 2 more FPS average, RX 9060 XT had 1 more FPS minimum. Frame times equal. Result is a tie.
V. Comparison Conclusion
Overall, the performance of the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB and GeForce RTX 5060 at 1440P is not significantly different from their performance at 1080P. The competition remains tight, with wins and losses on both sides.
The conclusion is clear: Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB and GeForce RTX 5060 offer comparable gaming performance, closely matched. This mirrors the previous generation—Radeon RX 7600 XT and GeForce RTX 4060—where performance was also evenly balanced.
That said, GeForce RTX 5060 has the advantage in power efficiency and thermal performance. Given the same price, it is clearly the better value. Many had high hopes that the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB would outperform the GeForce RTX 5060 in both performance and value—but that simply isn’t the case. Don’t overthink it—it’s not worth the disappointment.
