Recently, the Argentine government officially requested Google to remotely delete all user-installed pirated IPTV applications—Magis TV—from Android devices within Argentina using technical means.

Magis TV is an app that streams illegal film and television resources and is not listed on the Google Play Store, primarily spreading through installation on Android TV boxes. Reports indicate that the app has been complained about by anti-piracy organizations for providing pirated content, leading the Argentine government to seize hundreds of TV boxes containing Magis TV. To further curb such infringement, Argentine courts have issued an order requiring Google, as the developer of the Android open-source project, to take necessary technical measures to uninstall the pirated app within Argentina.

This request poses a significant challenge for Google. The company typically uses its Google Play Protect mechanism to remotely address malware, including issuing warnings, disabling, or even uninstalling such software to protect user devices. However, the Argentine government’s request clearly exceeds Google’s standard security operations, as it involves user-installed apps that do not present direct security threats.

Google has not yet formally responded to the Argentine court’s request. The industry is closely watching whether Google will comply with the order or choose to appeal and further communicate with the Argentine courts to seek a solution that both protects user rights and effectively combats piracy.

This incident not only tests Google’s technical and legal response capabilities but also provokes deep reflection on digital copyright protection issues.
