April 2nd news: OpenAI announced that it will lower the usage threshold for its AI chatbot ChatGPT, allowing users without an account to access it, albeit with certain limitations.
Starting today, users in some regions accessing chat.openai.com will no longer need to log in to interact directly with ChatGPT. The rest of the world will gradually gain access to this login-free service. Users without an account can directly converse with ChatGPT, using the same model as logged-in users.
It’s noted that users without an account won’t have access to some advanced features, such as saving or sharing chat logs and using custom commands, which typically require a permanent account.
More importantly, users without an account can opt out of having their chat logs used for model training—a likely key reason for OpenAI’s provision of the login-free feature. Users simply need to click on the question mark icon in the bottom right corner, then go to “Settings” and disable the relevant feature.
However, the login-free version of ChatGPT will have “stricter content policies.” What exactly does this mean? OpenAI’s spokesperson provided a lengthy but vague explanation: “The login-free experience will benefit from existing safety measures built into the model, such as refusing to generate harmful content. In addition to these existing measures, we’ve implemented additional safeguards for types of inappropriate content that might arise in the login-free experience. We considered potential ways the unlogged service could be misused, alongside our understanding of GPT-3.5’s capabilities and our risk assessment.”
In other words, it’s still unclear what these stricter content policies specifically entail. As a large number of users flock to try this new feature, the details should become clearer. “We acknowledge that further iterations may be necessary and welcome user feedback,” said the spokesperson from OpenAI.
Regarding misuse, OpenAI provided another vague answer: “We’ve also carefully considered how to detect and prevent abusive behavior in the login-free experience. The team responsible for detecting, preventing, and responding to abuse was involved in the design and implementation of the entire login-free experience and will continue to support its design.”
OpenAI’s response lacks any concrete information; they might be as uncertain as we are about how users will utilize this login-free feature, thus adopting a reactive approach.
It’s currently unclear which regions or user groups will be the first to get ChatGPT without logging in, but the plan has already been set in motion starting today.
