Due to optimism that there will be a demand for PC replacement, buyers (customers) are accepting price increases from storage manufacturers to stabilize procurement, driving the price of DRAM used for temporary data storage in smartphones, PCs, and data center servers to rise for four consecutive months.
In February 2024, the benchmark product DDR4 8Gb wholesale price (bulk transaction price) was about $1.95 each, up 5% from the previous month (January 2024). The price for the smaller capacity 4Gb product was about $1.50 each, up 7% from the previous month, with prices rising for the fourth consecutive month. Compared to the same month last year, they increased by 15-22%.
DRAM wholesale prices are determined between storage manufacturers and customers once a month or once a quarter.
Reports indicate that previously, due to a sluggish market leading to deteriorating performance, storage manufacturers continuously demanded price increases to improve profitability. Buyers, aiming to avoid future procurement issues and valuing the maintenance of relationships with storage manufacturers, thus accepted the price hikes.
The American research firm Gartner released a forecast report in December 2023, stating that with storage expected to see double-digit growth, 2024 is anticipated to be a rebound year, with global semiconductor revenue expected to surge to $624 billion, an annual increase of 17%.
Gartner noted that in 2024, storage demand is expected to show a strong recovery, with revenue forecasted to explode by 66.3%. Among this, Flash Memory revenue is expected to skyrocket by 49.6%, and DRAM revenue is projected to surge by 88%.
