Discover how quartz enables precision & reliability in semiconductor equipment, supporting high-temperature and cleanroom manufacturing processes.
Exploring Quartz Applications in Semiconductor Devices

Table of Contents

What quartz components are commonly used in furnace tube equipment, besides furnace tubes, and what are the other applications?

Properties of quartz:

  1. Low coefficient of thermal expansion—quartz undergoes minimal volume change with temperature variations.
  2. High purity: low-end w(SiO2) ≥ 99.9% (3N), mid-range w(SiO2) ≥ 99.99% (4N), mid-high-end w(SiO2) ≥ 99.995% (4N5), high-end w(SiO2) ≥ 99.998% (4N8).
  3. High temperature resistance—can be used in high-temperature environments without easily deforming or cracking.
  4. Chemically stable—not prone to reacting with acids or bases.
  5. Excellent insulation.
  6. Good light transmission and mechanical strength.

Quartz processing procedure:
Quartz ore ⇒ Quartz sand ⇒ Quartz tubes, rods, ingots ⇒ Quartz parts

Quartz sand comes from three sources:

  1. Natural quartz
  2. Rock crystal
  3. Synthetic quartz

Applications of quartz in semiconductor equipment:
Quartz components are used in processes such as epitaxy, lithography, diffusion, oxidation, cleaning, CVD, RTP, PVD, and etching.

Main components include:

  1. Quartz furnace tubes—zones where wafers undergo high-temperature heating
  2. Quartz boats
  3. Quartz rings
  4. Quartz baskets
  5. Quartz crucibles
    etc.
