At CES 2025, Phison Electronics made a major announcement with the release of the world’s first DRAM-less PCIe Gen5 SSD controller.
It offers performance exceeding 10GB/s.
Many SSDs come with dedicated DRAM chips, which act as a metadata buffer between the controller and NAND flash memory.
NVMe SSDs without DRAM typically support HMB technology, which helps the controller access system memory via Direct Memory Access (DMA).
So far, all Gen5 NVMe drives have been equipped with DRAM chips for caching, but Phison’s new PS5031-E31T eliminates this feature to make PCIe 5.0 SSDs more affordable.
In terms of positioning, the new E31T has already been integrated into Micron’s Crucial P510 SSD, which is based on G9 NAND flash.
However, its pricing and how it compares to other Gen5 NVMe drives with DRAM cache remains to be seen.
In addition to the E31T NAND controller, Phison also unveiled the world’s first native USB4 SoC, the U21.
Furthermore, storage manufacturers such as Silicon Motion and ADATA showcased several new products at CES.
Silicon Motion released the SM2508, a high-performance, low-power PCIe Gen5 SSD controller chip specifically designed for AI laptops.
They also introduced the MonTitan PCIe Gen5 enterprise SSD development platform, designed for AI storage workloads.
