The design of portable hard drives has remained mostly the same over time, typically simple and minimalist, with few major changes in appearance.
However, the lack of variation in design is often due more to cost considerations than the inability to innovate.
Even though mass production is unlikely, some designs are quite interesting. For instance, one designer created a concept of a portable hard drive that looks like a computer folder.
In the concept images, the designer offers several color options for the folder-shaped portable SSD, including the typical computer folder orange-yellow, as well as red, white, black, and blue.
Notably, there’s a raised section in the middle of the drive, which not only accommodates the drive itself but also adds to the look of an actual folder.
The drive’s interface is located at the bottom, using the popular Type-C port.
Inside the case is an SSD, as the compact size and thinness wouldn’t fit a traditional HDD; only an SSD could be made so lightweight.
The capacity is marked as 1TB, which is also a mainstream choice for portable SSDs.
The idea of designing a portable hard drive to resemble a computer folder is indeed intriguing. Just imagine—you might feel the urge to start storing files as soon as you see it!
That said, while the design is attractive, it’s also somewhat flashy. For example, the extra section on the top left could make it inconvenient to carry around.
