At noon, I had lunch and chatted with friends, discussing the Huawei 9000s mobile chip, and wondering where it’s produced.

Currently, the prevailing opinion is that it comes from SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation).

This view is not without reason. Since Liang Mengsong joined SMIC, the manufacturing process has made significant strides. It has long surpassed 14nm and, with multiple exposure technologies, 7nm has become a reality.

However, my perspective is quite different.

You see, if SMIC were to manufacture for Huawei, it would need to consider many factors. Firstly, SMIC’s manufacturing equipment, including lithography machines and materials, could face pressure from the U.S. Secondly, SMIC’s clients are not limited to domestic ones; it also has many European and American clients. They too face the risk of loss.

In conclusion, if SMIC were to manufacture for Huawei, it would indeed require careful consideration.

At least for now, I believe it’s not mature.

You might wonder why SMIC doesn’t secretly manufacture chips for Huawei. Well, that’s highly unlikely because if Huawei’s 9000s chips can be produced, the first suspicion from the U.S. would fall on China’s leading chip manufacturer, SMIC, leading to a thorough investigation. This is something that can’t be kept hidden.

Therefore, it’s highly improbable that SMIC is manufacturing Huawei’s 9000s mobile chips.

The online rumor is about SiEn, but this is also unlikely because SiEn mainly focuses on mature processes and hasn’t reached such advanced nodes yet.

We know that Huawei has been involved in chip manufacturing for some time now, and what people may not know is that Huawei has also been collaborating with domestic research institutions on lithography machines.

With Huawei’s efficiency, even if semiconductor equipment is not fully produced domestically at the moment, it should be possible to modify and upgrade existing foreign equipment.

So, who manufactures for Huawei? At this point, many of you might have guessed that it’s Huawei itself.

In other words, Huawei has become capable of designing and manufacturing its chips (similar to the Intel model) and is no longer just a fabless company. Therefore, there are no longer issues related to manufacturing constraints.

Unlike Intel, which is primarily in the chip business, Huawei also has various other businesses such as smartphones and communication devices. (Huawei’s Patents: Chip Packaging & Prep Methods)

Huawei is different from typical smartphone companies; it’s more like Apple in some aspects, as it has its smartphone operating system.

However, Apple has not only struggled with chip production but even designed 5G baseband chips for smartphones. Therefore, Huawei can be considered a combination of Apple and Qualcomm.

To put it differently, if we were to break down Huawei, it could potentially split into an Apple, a Qualcomm, and an Intel (or maybe even TSMC in a few years) – of course, focusing mainly on the smartphone business here.

Apple’s market value is close to three trillion dollars. So, how much do you think Huawei is worth?

In the afternoon, I came across another piece of information online stating that Huawei’s chips are produced in Dongguan. While this news isn’t confirmed, it somewhat aligns with my speculation because Dongguan is where Huawei’s headquarters are currently located.
