On August 29, 2023, Huawei unexpectedly launched the Mate 60 series of high-end smartphones without the editor’s knowledge, a move that shocked the industry like a bolt from the blue.
The launch of the Huawei Mate 60 series has popularized the term, “far ahead.” To be fair, the birth of the Kirin 9000S processor was no small feat and is indeed a proud achievement.
However, objectively speaking, the actual performance of the Kirin 9000S processor cannot be considered “far ahead” when compared to competitors from Qualcomm and MediaTek, even though this comparison might not be entirely fair. Nevertheless, it’s important to recognize this reality.
That said, there is true “far ahead” news about Huawei to share.
Recently, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released data showing that Huawei applied for 6,494 patents in 2023, securing the global top spot. Samsung ranked second, and applied for 3,924 patents, a significant difference, making the term “far ahead” an apt description.
Here’s the 2023 global patent application company TOP 10:
- 10th place: (Japan) Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, with 1,760 applications;
- 9th place: (China) OPPO, with 1,766 applications;
- 8th place: (China) CATL, with 1,799 applications;
- 7th place: (Sweden) Ericsson, with 1,863 applications;
- 6th place: (South Korea) LG, with 1,887 applications;
- 5th place: (China) BOE Technology, with 1,988 applications;
- 4th place: (Japan) Mitsubishi, with 2,152 applications;
- 3rd place: (USA) Qualcomm, with 2,853 applications;
- 2nd place: (South Korea) Samsung, with 3,924 applications;
- 1st place: (China) Huawei, with 6,494 applications.
Among the top 10, there are four Chinese companies, two Japanese, two Korean, and one American company, with Huawei, Samsung, and Qualcomm leading.
In terms of total patent numbers, the global total of international patent applications submitted in 2023 was 272,600, a 1.8% decrease from the previous year. Chinese companies led with a total of 69,610 applications, followed by the United States with 58,823, showcasing a significant lead, with Japan, South Korea, and Germany following in third to fifth places.
The top 50 companies on this list are high-tech firms developing hardware, telecommunications technology, and software. Internet giants and software behemoths like Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Meta are not in the top 10, with Microsoft ranking highest at 18th and Google at 23rd.
Additionally, there’s interest in the rankings of Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, and other Chinese companies:
ZTE is 11th with 1,738 applications; Vivo is 13th with 1,631 applications; Xiaomi is 14th with 1,603 applications; Apple is 29th with 761 applications; Honor is 30th with 753 applications.
Objectively, the number of patent applications doesn’t fully represent or reflect the overall technological level and strength of a country. China still has a gap to bridge with the United States, but the list shows the perseverance and resilience of Chinese companies, continuously accumulating and strategizing.
The conclusion is: In the face of various difficulties and gaps in our country’s high-tech industry, we must remain clear-headed. While we shouldn’t be overly optimistic, there’s no reason for pessimism either. Chinese tech companies have huge potential for development and are advancing rapidly, which should inspire confidence.
