To address the instability issues with the 13th/14th generation Core processors, Intel has extended warranty services and confirmed that affected customers can contact customer service for a free replacement. However, there are some special circumstances, and recently in Hong Kong, there was an incident where warranty service was denied.
According to reports, a Hong Kong gamer’s i9-14900K started showing instability, so he went to the Lianqiang service center to apply for a replacement, but his request was rejected. The reason was that he used liquid metal as the thermal interface material.
The gamer believed that he had completed all the necessary procedures and paperwork, and felt that the after-sales service was making excuses to intentionally deny the warranty.
Subsequently, the media contacted Lianqiang, who confirmed that the incident occurred on November 7th. The rejection was due to the liquid metal causing severe corrosion on the chip surface, making it impossible to identify the specific model or serial number.
The staff also mentioned that they had contacted Intel to inquire whether an exception could be made, but Intel declined the request.
Upon checking Intel’s official warranty policy, it is clearly stated that using liquid metal thermal interface material (LMTIM) will void the warranty on Intel boxed processors.
This is because LMTIM may be corrosive, potentially erasing the markings on the processor, which are essential for verifying whether the product is under warranty.
In fact, whether the product is purchased locally or as an import, and whether it’s an Intel or AMD processor, the policy is the same: if the markings on the chip are illegible or if the heat spreader shows signs of tampering, warranty service will be denied.
So, a reminder to all gamers: if you use liquid metal for cooling, be sure to consider whether you still need the warranty.
