Friends who are digital enthusiasts know that Apple generally releases new products in September. It’s almost June now, and according to the usual schedule, the next generation iPhone 16 series should have already been finalized in design and entered the mass production stage to ensure it can be launched immediately upon release.
Recently, there have been rumors and leaks about how the screen orders for the iPhone 16 series are arranged. It is said that Apple has given orders for OLED screens suitable for the iPhone 16 Pro models to Samsung and LG, and both manufacturers have now begun large-scale production.
Unfortunately, Chinese manufacturer BOE did not receive orders for the OLED screens of the iPhone 16 Pro series. However, it did secure orders for the LTPS screens suitable for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
Of course, the most attention is focused on who will get the screen orders for Apple’s flagship model in the iPhone 16 series, the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This issue is still undecided, and Apple has not yet made a formal decision. It is expected that Apple will make the final decision by mid-next month.
The main reason for the delay is that Apple is rumored to be adopting the “Border Reduction Structure” technology in the iPhone 16 series, which will allow the screens to have thinner bezels compared to the previous generation iPhone 15 series. Due to the overall difficulty of this technology, Apple is being relatively cautious and conservative. It is speculated that the screen orders for the iPhone 16 Pro Max are most likely to go to either Samsung or LG or possibly both.
From the current known information, it seems more likely that Apple will choose Samsung, as Samsung’s screens are of higher quality compared to LG’s after verification by Apple. This puts LG at a disadvantage. Therefore, whether LG can secure the orders for the iPhone 16 Pro Max screens next month is highly anticipated.
Moreover, this decision is not fixed and unchangeable. LG will continue to improve its quality, and Apple will also consider production capacity factors. Even if Apple initially chooses Samsung, it does not rule out the possibility of subsequently allocating some orders to LG.
As a reference, last year, Apple initially gave the screen manufacturing orders for the iPhone 15 series to Samsung, and LG only received orders for the iPhone 15 Pro series OLED screens months later. This year, Apple might arrange it similarly.
Barring any unexpected events, the iPhone 16 series is still expected to be released this September. The currently known and referenceable key information includes:
- The height of the iPhone 16 Pro model is 149.6mm, and the height of the iPhone 16 Pro Max model is 163.0mm.
- It has narrower bezels and more efficient OLED displays with brighter micro-lens technology.
- It is equipped with the A18 Pro chip, utilizing TSMC’s N3E-enhanced 3nm process, which is one of the most notable highlights.
