According to foreign media reports, Apple originally planned to use an anti-scratch and anti-reflection coating on the iPhone 17 Pro screen, but this plan has now been canceled due to issues encountered during the manufacturing process.
It is reported that using the anti-reflection coating would significantly increase production time. Even though Apple intended to use it only on the Pro models, it seems there wouldn’t be enough time to implement it, so the plan was canceled.
The anti-reflection coating has been used in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, allowing the screen to have better transparency. Compared to screens without the coating, the Galaxy S24 Ultra shows significantly less reflection, with a noticeable improvement in display performance under strong light. Additionally, the coating makes the screen surface more scratch-resistant, reducing the appearance of scratches.
The anti-reflection coating can significantly improve display performance, but it requires more precise manufacturing processes and increases the cost of the new device. While it’s disappointing that Apple canceled the use of the coating on the iPhone 17 Pro, it’s not without alternative solutions.
Many current models already offer AR screen protectors, which also use anti-reflection coatings and provide similar results as directly applying the coating to the phone screen. Of course, these screen protectors are quite expensive.
For Apple, rather than introducing new technology that would increase costs, selling screen protectors is a way to generate more profit.
