Sometimes our laptops inexplicably slow down, encounter key errors, freeze, or even crash. In fact, there are software or hardware reasons for these issues, but some bad habits while using laptops can also harm them. DiskMFR has listed some things you should avoid doing when using a laptop. Let’s take a look together!

01

Do not frequently touch the screen with your fingers.

The surface of a laptop’s LCD display screen is coated with a special layer that enhances the clarity of the screen’s display. This special coating is only a few micrometers thick, so it is usually imperceptible. However, long-term use of fingernails or hard objects to tap the screen can damage this coating, significantly affecting the screen’s display quality. Additionally, laptop screens are made of liquid crystal materials, and excessive pressure can lead to the movement of liquid crystals at the point of contact, resulting in bright spots, dark spots, or dead pixels, which can impact the visual quality of the screen.

02

Do not place your laptop on a blanket.

Some people, especially girls, enjoy using a laptop in bed for gaming or watching movies. It’s comfortable to use a laptop while lying in bed. However, have you ever considered how the laptop feels about this? The soft surface of the blanket can envelop the laptop, causing serious issues with heat dissipation. If you notice it in time, it may not have a significant impact. However, if this situation continues for an extended period, it can cause significant damage to the laptop.

03

Do not eat or drink while using your laptop.

When using a laptop, having a water bottle nearby may not seem like a big deal, but the consequences can be disastrous if it gets knocked over, potentially damaging the motherboard. While many laptops claim to be waterproof, not every laptop has this feature. Therefore, the best solution is to always secure the lid on your drink after use. If you’re using an open cup, keep it as far away from your laptop as possible to avoid unnecessary accidents.

04

Do not clutter your laptop area with too many items.

Many people have the habit of keeping commonly used tools, books, or files around their laptops. Over time, these items can accumulate dust and obstruct the area around the laptop, preventing proper ventilation and cooling. This can undoubtedly impact the laptop’s performance, leading to sluggishness. Blame only your own bad habits if your computer starts to slow down.

05

Do not forcefully pound on the keyboard.

This is a habit that gamers are particularly prone to. My roommate, when gaming, can get so engrossed that his whole body moves along with the keyboard pounding. Furthermore, when you’re emotionally unstable or angry, it’s easy to hit the keyboard with excessive force. This not only affects the key’s elasticity but can also damage the internal components of the laptop.

06

Do not overload your laptop.

One of his friends mentioned that his laptop had been running non-stop for a year. It’s either for gaming or downloading things. Regardless, it’s always in use. While laptops don’t need to eat or drink, they do need rest. Additionally, leaving a laptop running continuously can accumulate dust and impurities over time. The 24/7 heating of internal components is detrimental, accelerating their aging process. Moreover, if there’s no one at home, there’s even a risk of fire. So, just like people, laptops also need breaks from prolonged use.

07

Do not smoke while typing.

The harmful effects of smoking on human health are well-known, but for laptops, the presence of cigarette ash can be problematic. Not only can it fall into the gaps between the keyboard keys, but it can also block ventilation holes and threaten the DVD drive’s (except for laptops with SSDs and no optical drives) read/write heads. Some may argue that using a keyboard cover should suffice, but that’s not entirely true. While a keyboard cover can effectively prevent impurities from adhering to the keyboard surface, it can lead to other issues. The keyboard area is also an important part of a laptop’s ventilation system. Using a keyboard cover may likely reduce the laptop’s cooling capacity, potentially causing even more significant problems.
