Reports indicate that executives from Microsoft and OpenAI are discussing an unprecedented data center project.

The project involves building an artificial intelligence supercomputer called “Stargate,” which will have millions of dedicated server chips to support OpenAI’s AI technology.

Insiders revealed that the investment in the project could be as high as an astonishing $100 billion (approximately 722.13 billion CNY).

Overall, the plan could involve an investment of more than $115 billion, a figure that is more than three times Microsoft’s total capital expenditures on servers, office buildings, and other equipment last year.

The advancement of the “Stargate” project largely depends on whether OpenAI can significantly improve its AI technology’s capabilities. If the “Stargate” project progresses smoothly, the computing power it offers will see an exponential increase.

However, “Stargate” is expected to require at least several billion watts of electricity, equivalent to the total power needed to run several large data centers currently. Therefore, securing sufficient electrical support is a significant challenge.

Microsoft and OpenAI executives have discussed launching “Stargate” as early as 2028 and as late as 2030, potentially requiring up to 5,000 megawatts of power.
