However, some users may be considering an upgrade and wondering how much of a performance boost they can expect by upgrading from the GeForce RTX 2070 to the latest GeForce RTX 5070. This article will reveal the answer through testing for those interested.

Specification Comparison
The GeForce RTX 2070 was released on October 17, 2018. It uses the TU106 GPU, based on the Turing architecture, built on TSMC’s 12nm process. It has 2,304 shader units, 144 texture units, 64 raster units, 36 ray tracing cores, 36 streaming multiprocessors, 288 tensor cores, and 4MB of L2 cache.
It runs at a base clock of 1410 MHz and a boost clock of 1620 MHz. It comes with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, a memory speed of 14 Gbps, a memory bus width of 256-bit, and a memory bandwidth of 448.0 GB/s. The FP32 floating-point performance is 7.465 TFLOPS, power consumption is 175W, and the suggested retail price is $499.
The GeForce RTX 5070 was released on January 6, 2025. It uses the GB205 GPU chip, built on TSMC’s 5nm process. It has 6,144 CUDA cores, 192 texture units, 48 streaming multiprocessors, 192 tensor cores, and 48 ray tracing cores.
It has 40MB of L2 cache, a base clock of 2165 MHz, a boost clock of 2510 MHz, and comes with 12GB of GDDR7 memory. The memory bus width is 192-bit, the memory speed is 28 Gbps, and the memory bandwidth is 672 GB/s. The FP32 floating-point performance is 30.84 TFLOPS, power consumption is 250W, and the reference price is $549.

The processor is a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the motherboard is an MSI MPG X670E CARBON, the memory is 32GB DDR5 6000 MHz, the graphics cards used are the GeForce RTX 2070 and GeForce RTX 5070 respectively, the storage consists of two Samsung 970 EVO 1TB drives, and the operating system is Windows 11.

Game Testing (RTX 2070 vs RTX 5070)
Seven games were tested below, all using 1440P graphics settings. In the following series of images, the left side represents the GeForce RTX 2070 platform, and the right side represents the GeForce RTX 5070 platform.
The first game is God of War.
On the GeForce RTX 2070 platform: average FPS was 58, minimum FPS was 49, frame time was 17.9ms, CPU usage was 19%, CPU power was 42W, temperature was 48°C, memory usage was 12.7GB, GPU usage was 99%, VRAM usage was 6.4GB, GPU power was 180W, temperature was 56°C.
On the GeForce RTX 5070 platform: average FPS was 134, minimum FPS was 112, frame time was 7.4ms, CPU usage was 33%, CPU power was 52W, temperature was 53°C, memory usage was 12.7GB, GPU usage was 99%, VRAM usage was 6.8GB, GPU power was 207W, temperature was 52°C.
In this game, the GeForce RTX 5070 platform had 14% higher CPU usage, equal memory and GPU usage, 0.4GB more VRAM usage, 27W higher power consumption, and 4°C lower temperature. Average FPS was 76 higher, about 2.3x, minimum FPS was 63 higher, and frame time was about 10ms lower.
The second game is Ghostwire: Tokyo.
On the GeForce RTX 2070 platform: average FPS was 34, minimum FPS was 31, frame time was 28.2ms, CPU usage was 8%, power was 37W, temperature was 49°C, memory usage was 12.4GB, GPU usage was 99%, VRAM usage was 6.9GB, GPU power was 186W, temperature was 56°C.
On the GeForce RTX 5070 platform: average FPS was 70, minimum FPS was 64, frame time was 14.5ms, CPU usage was 13%, power was 51W, temperature was 54°C, memory usage was 10.4GB, GPU usage was 99%, VRAM usage was 6.5GB, GPU power was 217W, temperature was 54°C.
Here, the RTX 5070 had 5% higher CPU usage, 2GB less memory usage, 0.4GB less VRAM usage, 31W more power, and 2°C lower temperature. It had 36 more FPS (about 2.1x), 33 higher minimum FPS, and 10ms lower frame time.
The third game is Cyberpunk 2077.
On the GeForce RTX 2070 platform: average FPS was 30, minimum FPS was 25, frame time was 34.8ms, CPU usage was 25%, power was 59W, temperature was 54°C, memory usage was 14.7GB, GPU usage was 99%, VRAM usage was 7.8GB, GPU power was 175W, temperature was 56°C.
On the GeForce RTX 5070 platform: average FPS was 76, minimum FPS was 60, frame time was 13.2ms, CPU usage was 43%, power was 81W, temperature was 61°C, memory usage was 12.2GB, GPU usage was 98%, VRAM usage was 9.7GB, GPU power was 210W, temperature was 54°C.
RTX 5070 had 18% higher CPU usage, 2.5GB less memory usage, 1.9GB more VRAM usage (RTX 2070 maxed out), 35W more power, and 2°C lower temperature. It outperformed with 46 more FPS (about 2.5x), 35 higher minimum FPS, and frame time 31ms lower. RTX 2070 was too laggy to run smoothly.
The fourth game is Red Dead Redemption 2.
On the GeForce RTX 2070 platform: average FPS was 49, minimum FPS was 45, frame time was 21.1ms, CPU usage was 13%, power was 43W, temperature was 46°C, memory usage was 13.4GB, GPU usage was 96%, VRAM usage was 5.2GB, GPU power was 175W, temperature was 53°C.

RTX 5070 had 9% higher CPU usage, 1.5GB less memory usage, 0.2GB more VRAM usage, 31W more power, and 1°C lower temperature. It had 63 higher average FPS (about 2.3x), 53 higher minimum FPS, and 13ms lower frame time.
The fifth game is Horizon Forbidden West.
On the GeForce RTX 2070 platform: average FPS was 46, minimum FPS was 40, frame time was 21.6ms, CPU usage was 31%, power was 81W, temperature was 68°C, memory usage was 11.7GB, GPU usage was 99%, VRAM usage was 6.8GB, GPU power was 176W, temperature was 53°C.
On the GeForce RTX 5070 platform: average FPS was 101, minimum FPS was 88, frame time was 9.4ms, CPU usage was 42%, power was 95W, temperature was 71°C, memory usage was 11.4GB, GPU usage was 98%, VRAM usage was 8.2GB, GPU power was 211W, temperature was 51°C.
RTX 5070 had 11% higher CPU usage, 0.3GB less memory usage, 1.4GB more VRAM usage, 35W more power, and 2°C lower temperature. Average FPS was 55 higher (about 2.2x), minimum FPS was 48 higher, frame time 12ms lower.
The sixth game is Black Myth: Wukong.
On the GeForce RTX 2070 platform: average FPS was 19, minimum FPS was 15, frame time was 52.4ms, CPU usage was 5%, power was 38W, temperature was 46°C, memory usage was 12.6GB, GPU usage was 99%, VRAM usage was 6.3GB, GPU power was 182W, temperature was 56°C.
On the GeForce RTX 5070 platform: average FPS was 49, minimum FPS was 39, frame time was 20.8ms, CPU usage was 10%, power was 48W, temperature was 53°C, memory usage was 12.1GB, GPU usage was 98%, VRAM usage was 7.1GB, GPU power was 211W, temperature was 53°C.
RTX 5070 had 5% higher CPU usage, 0.5GB less memory usage, 0.8GB more VRAM usage, 29W more power, and 3°C lower temperature. Average FPS was 30 higher (about 2.6x), minimum FPS was 24 higher, frame time 32ms lower. RTX 2070 could not run this game smoothly.
The seventh game is Silent Hill 2.
On the GeForce RTX 2070 platform: average FPS was 44, minimum FPS was 36, frame time was 22.2ms, CPU usage was 11%, power was 43W, temperature was 49°C, memory usage was 12.8GB, GPU usage was 98%, VRAM usage was 6.6GB, GPU power was 163W, temperature was 52°C.

RTX 5070 had 5% higher CPU usage, 1.5GB less memory usage, 0.4GB more VRAM usage, 16W more power, and 2°C lower temperature. Average FPS was 53 higher (about 2.2x), minimum FPS was 40 higher, frame time 11ms lower.

Comparison Conclusion
Overall, compared to the GeForce RTX 2070, the GeForce RTX 5070 shows a very clear performance advantage, with overwhelming improvements across the board. Power consumption hasn’t increased much, but performance has improved significantly, and temperatures are actually lower.
Based on the comprehensive data above, the overall performance of the GeForce RTX 5070 is approximately 2.3 times that of the GeForce RTX 2070. In other words, upgrading from the GeForce RTX 2070 to the latest GeForce RTX 5070 can deliver at least double the performance, which is the final conclusion of this article, for reference only.
