Recently, a user on the Korean QUASARZONE forum reported that their GALAXY RTX 4090 graphics card experienced a power connector meltdown despite following the manual’s instructions for installing the 12+4 pin power cable. This user was subsequently denied warranty service by the authorized dealer.
The user stated that they installed the original 12+4 pin power cable that came with the graphics card, strictly according to the manual, leaving more than 45mm of straight, unbent length, but still encountered the issue.
This Korean user, a graphic designer who uses the graphics card for work, noted that the GPU load is lower in this context than when gaming.
In terms of gaming, the user primarily plays “Genshin Impact,” but even with the game running at 4K with maximum settings, the GPU load on the RTX 4090 is only 35%.
Some time ago, the user noticed initial signs of the issue: the screen went black while playing “Genshin Impact.” After reinstalling the GPU and power cable, no problems with the power connector were apparent at the time.
Last week, the problem worsened, and the user’s PC shut down while gaming. Upon inspection, the user discovered that the power connector on the graphics card side had melted.
The user contacted WAYCOS, the authorized dealer for GALAXY graphics cards in Korea, for repair. However, the repair request was denied on the grounds of “user error,” forcing the user to seek third-party repair services.
Since the introduction of the 12-pin power cable with the RTX 30 series graphics cards, the 12-pin and the subsequent 12+4pin power cables have faced ongoing criticism regarding their reliability.
According to previous reports from DiskMFR, a repair technician recently mentioned that they still repair 200 RTX 4090 graphics cards with melted power connectors every month.
On the 1st of this month, another user on the QUASARZONE forum reported that the power connectors on both their RTX 4090 graphics card and FSP Hydro power supply had melted under power-limited conditions, suffering a “double kill.”
