Introduction

A few days ago, the editor shared a lot of news about the AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors, but most came from rumors and leaks from third-party sources. Now, official news from AMD has arrived, including the parameters, performance improvements, and release date of the Ryzen 9000 series processors.

Models and Specifications

Consistent with previous rumors, the announced models of the Ryzen 9000 series processors include Ryzen 9 9950X, Ryzen 9 9900X, Ryzen 7 9700X, and Ryzen 5 9600X.

For detailed specifications of these four processors and their differences from the previous generation, please refer to the chart below. In general, there are “basically” no differences in operating frequency, cache capacity, and integrated graphics computing units.

Key Upgrades of Ryzen 9000

Core Architecture Upgrade of Ryzen 9000

The main upgrade is the core architecture of the processors, which has been upgraded from Zen 4 to Zen 5, marking the most significant improvement.

Slight Increase in Operating Frequency for Some Models

Although the operating frequencies of the two generations of processors are “basically” the same, they are not “completely” the same. Some models have slight differences in operating frequency, which is better than nothing.

Specifically, the operating frequency of the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 7950X remains unchanged. Still, the maximum operating frequency of the Ryzen 7 9700X (5.5GHz) has increased by 0.1 GHz compared to the Ryzen 7 7700X (5.4GHz). The maximum operating frequency of the Ryzen 5 9600X (5.4GHz) has increased by 0.1 GHz compared to the Ryzen 5 7600X (5.3GHz).

Significant Reduction in Power Consumption

The power consumption of the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 7950X is the same at 170W. However, the Ryzen 9 9900X (120W) has reduced by 50W compared to the Ryzen 9 7900X (170W), the Ryzen 7 9700X (65W) has reduced by 40W compared to the Ryzen 7 7700X (105W), and the Ryzen 5 7600X (105W) has also reduced by 40W.

Actual Performance Improvement

Some people might see that the parameters of the Ryzen 9000 series processors are roughly the same as the previous generation Ryzen 7000 series and immediately conclude that the performance upgrade is minimal, equating to a “toothpaste squeezing” scenario. This view is very arbitrary and incorrect.

AMD stated that the IPC (Instructions Per Clock) performance of the Ryzen 9000 series processors has improved by 16% compared to the previous generation.

They also compared the Ryzen 9 9950X with Intel’s Core i9-14900K, showing that in productivity performance, it outperforms its competitor by 4% to 56%, and in gaming performance, it surpasses its competitor by 4% to 23%. Please refer to the chart above.

Chipset and Motherboard

Overall, the situation aligns with previous rumors. There are two high-end models, X870E and X870. The main difference is that the X870E has two Promontory21 chipsets, while the X870 has only one. Please refer to the chart above.

The mainstream mid-range model is B850. Additionally, a reduced, downgraded model, B840, will be introduced. The main differences between B840 and B850 are threefold:

  1. The B840 motherboard uses the Promontory19 chipset, while the B850 motherboard uses the Promontory21 chipset.
  2. The B840 motherboard does not support processor overclocking.
  3. The B840 motherboard does not support PCIe 5.0, only PCIe 4.0.

The B840 motherboard is expected to address the high price point of AMD’s new platform motherboards. Additionally, AMD has promised that the AM5 motherboard lifecycle will be supported until at least 2027. Please refer to the chart above.

Release Date

AMD stated that the Ryzen 9000 series processors will be officially released in July 2024.

Overall Review

In summary, the main highlights of the Ryzen 9000 series processors are as follows:

  1. Upgrade from Zen 4 architecture to Zen 5 architecture;
  2. IPC performance increased by 16%;
  3. Significant reduction in power consumption;
  4. Introduction of the B840 chipset and motherboard.

AMD has not released more information about the Ryzen 9000 series processors, including the most critical aspects such as price and AI performance. The editor will share more related updates and leaks as soon as possible. Stay tuned.
