Slow Startup? Disable This Windows App Immediately Now

Many users often choose the default Microsoft Photos application when viewing photos and videos. This app comes pre-installed with the Windows system, making it convenient and quick to use. However, recently, many users have reported that this app is causing their computers to slow down, which is frustrating.

According to an investigation by PC World, there are two main reasons why the Microsoft Photos app is slowing down computers:

  1. In June, Microsoft migrated the Photos app from UWP (Universal Windows Platform) to Windows App SDK, and this change may have affected the app’s performance.
  2. Microsoft has continuously added new AI features to the Photos app, making it more powerful but also bulkier, which slows down its startup speed.

The good news is that not all Windows users are affected (at least not yet). Currently, only Windows 11 version 2024.11050.3002.0 is impacted. However, as time goes on, more users will be affected, especially once the new Photos app is integrated into Windows 10.

The Photos app cannot be completely uninstalled because it is a part of Windows. When Windows starts, the Photos app automatically starts as well. However, we can disable its automatic startup with Windows:

Here are two methods to disable the automatic startup of the Microsoft Photos app:

Method 1: Disable through Settings

  1. Open computer settings and go to the “Apps” section.
  2. Click on “Startup” and find the “Photos” option.
  3. Toggle the switch next to it to the “Off” position.

Method 2: Disable through Task Manager

  1. Use the Ctrl + Shift + Esc shortcut to open Task Manager.
  2. Click on “Startup” in the left navigation bar and find the “Photos” option.
  3. Select the option and click the “Disable” button at the top.

Will disabling the automatic startup of the Microsoft Photos app affect normal use? Actually, there’s no need to worry. After disabling, you can still manually open the Photos app when needed. Although you may have to wait a little longer than before, this slight delay is negligible compared to the overall performance improvement of your computer.
