NAND flash controller manufacturer SMI announced on July 28th, 2022 the launch of MonTitan, a PCIe Gen5 SSD solution platform ideal for the most challenging data center and enterprise applications.
SMI’s new Montitan platform uses a new dedicated ASIC and firmware architecture optimized for performance and QoS. Its unique layered firmware stack enables the development of customer differentiated solutions with a high degree of flexibility and accelerated time-to-market while reducing engineering costs.

MonTitan is a high-performance, user-programmable PCIe Gen5 platform that uses the third-generation NVMe master series, SM8366, and supports OCP Datacenter NVMe SSD and NVMe 2.0 specifications. Leveraging proprietary PerformaShape and NANDCommand technologies, MonTitan delivers superior performance, QoS, and industry-leading security.
SMI MonTitan SSD solution platform uses proprietary technologies such as:
- PerformaShape uses hardware isolation to provide ASIC-based QoS sets to ensure maximum BW performance while maximizing user-defined individual performance elements (QoS, latency, RR/RW, power).
- NANDCommand features excellent LDPC error correction and durability extensions for QLC and higher, maximizing enterprise performance for next-generation NAND geometry.
The MonTitan SM8366 ASIC is a dual-port PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe master controller for enterprise and data centers. It has 16 channels and supports a maximum of 2400MT/s. The SM8366 provides industry-leading 4K sequential (>14GB/s) and random (>3.0M IOPS) SSD performance and includes scalable single/dual channel 40-bit DDR-3200 / DDR5-4800 DRAM interfaces.
