On February 28th, Sony Interactive Entertainment released a surprising update for its classic console, the PS3, which is essential for users who want to use Blu-ray discs on the PS3. Although the PS3 stopped production back in 2016, Sony occasionally still provides software updates to maintain players’ gaming experience and access to the PlayStation Store.

Nearly 18 years after the PS3’s launch, its influence is still felt. The PlayStation Plus Premium subscription service offers a selection of PS3 games each month for PS4 and PS5 players to stream, in addition to allowing subscribers to enjoy classic games from PS1, PS2, and PSP. Some PS3 games, such as “Batman: Arkham City” and “The Last of Us,” have also made their way to newer consoles through remastered versions.

The editor noticed that Sony releases an update for the PS3 almost every year, with version 4.89 released in 2022 and version 4.90 in 2023. The latest PS3 system firmware update is version 49.1, requiring at least 200MB of free space to download and install. The update not only improves overall system performance and stability but also ensures the security of players’ PlayStation Network accounts. Importantly, the update provides new encryption keys for the Blu-ray player, allowing the PS3’s optical drive to continue playing Blu-ray discs. Sony strongly recommends PS3 players update to the latest firmware version to obtain the new encryption keys and continue using their consoles normally. Additionally, version 49.1 may include fixes for vulnerabilities in the PS3 system. (https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps3/system-software/)

For PS3 users with insufficient storage space, the firmware update file can also be downloaded through a web browser and transferred to a USB drive formatted as FAT32. The file should be named “PS3UPDAT.PUP,” and once the USB drive is inserted into the console, the system will recognize the update. This method is also applicable for downloading and installing PS5 system software updates.

As of 2023, there are still millions of active PS3 players, which proves the console is still beloved by many players worldwide. Although it’s nearly impossible for the PS3 to receive new features, Sony’s ongoing maintenance work allows players to continue enjoying their favorite PS3 games online.
