January 31st news, AMD recently started Gamers Nexus, confirming that it has not removed the STAPM restrictions on Ryzen 8700G, Ryzen 8600G, and other AM5 desktop APUs, resulting in a decline in performance.
According to a recent video shared by the YouTube channel Gamers Nexus, AMD inadvertently set STAPM limits on its new desktop APUs, affecting both the 8700G and 8600G. After running for a while, the power consumption would drop from around 80W to 50W.
AMD stated in a press release:
“We discovered that STAPM was incorrectly deployed on certain desktop models, where it was not supposed to be applied to desktop components.
We will release a BIOS update in the future to correct this behavior. If all goes well, the issue you’ve discovered will help many [customers], so it’s better to find it sooner rather than later.”
Note from DiskMFR: STAPM stands for Skin Temperature Aware Power Management Limit, which is the maximum power limit the processor can sustain after reaching the long-term acceleration time limit (default 275 seconds).
