According to the Phoenix Fire Department in Arizona, on the afternoon of May 15th, there was a hazardous materials explosion at the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) semiconductor plant in northern Phoenix. Multiple fire departments quickly responded to the call for assistance.
Phoenix Fire officials stated that firefighters from Phoenix, Glendale, and Daisy Mountain fire departments were dispatched to the TSMC semiconductor plant around 2:30 PM local time to handle the situation.
Local media reported that during the incident, one adult male worker at the scene was seriously injured and transported to the hospital.
The specific cause of the accident at the TSMC semiconductor plant is currently unclear, and TSMC has not yet responded to the incident.
Data shows that TSMC’s construction of two semiconductor plants in Phoenix, Arizona, has faced delays due to issues such as a shortage of skilled workers. The production schedule for Fab21, which produces 4nm chips, has been postponed from 2024 to 2025. In January 2024, TSMC announced that the production of chips using 3nm technology at Fab2, originally scheduled to begin in 2026, will now start in 2028. Upon completion of both plants, they are expected to have a combined annual production capacity of over 600,000 wafers, with an estimated market value of over $40 billion.
In April of this year, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced it would provide TSMC with up to $6.6 billion in subsidy funds and $5 billion in low-interest loans under the Chip Act to support the construction of advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Phoenix, Arizona. TSMC also announced a $25 billion increase in investment to build a third semiconductor plant in Arizona, expected to commence chip production using 2nm or more advanced technology in the late 2020s (2029-2030).
In addition, the editor believes that this incident will be another factor leading to the price increase of semiconductor storage products following the Hualien earthquake in Taiwan. What do you think?
