In 2014, Dutch player Louwrentius built a NAS with 24 4TB hard drives, totaling 96TB capacity and 71TB usable space. Now, ten years later, none of the hard drives have failed.
The hard drives used are from Hitachi, but the specific model is not mentioned.
Louwrentius believes that the stability is due not only to the high quality of the hard drives but also to the fact that the NAS is not always on; it is only powered up when needed. Over ten years, it has accumulated about 6,000 hours of use, which is around 250 days.
In other words, it runs for less than a month each year.
To avoid frequent manual startups, he uses a smart power strip along with the motherboard’s BMC, IPMI, and custom scripts for power management, allowing remote shutdown after use.
Frequent power cycling is not necessarily beneficial and is not the only factor, but it has proven effective in this case.
Louwrentius previously used a NAS made of 20 Samsung 1TB hard drives, which also ran without any failures for five years.
