In recent years, Samsung smartphones had a significant market share in China, making the Samsung brand very popular in the domestic digital circle.
However, with Samsung smartphones suffering a comprehensive defeat in the Chinese market in recent years, and the rise of the domestic display screen industry, Samsung’s popularity in the domestic digital circle has sharply declined. The halo is no longer there. Even when the company recently launched its latest Galaxy S24 series of smartphones, it failed to make any waves in the domestic digital circle, lacking any presence.
On the other hand, it’s undeniable that Samsung remains a genuine technology giant with very strong comprehensive capabilities. In the field of storage devices, Samsung still holds a considerable advantage over other manufacturers and competitors and is the absolute king.
For example, Samsung’s 970, 980, and 990 series of solid-state drives have always had a very good reputation in the market (including the domestic Chinese market) and have always been the first choice for high-end users.
This article is about news concerning Samsung solid-state drives, not about any issues with the SSD hardware, but rather a severe security vulnerability in Samsung’s official Magician management software (Samsung Magician Software) that has recently been officially disclosed by Samsung.
The security vulnerability is named “CVE-2024-23769.” Please refer to the following image; it has a security level score of 7.3, which is quite high, indicating a high-risk vulnerability.
Specifically, under Windows operating systems, attackers can exploit this vulnerability in the Samsung Magician Software version 8.0.0 to illegally elevate privileges in the system and access data that requires higher permissions.
It’s important to emphasize that the CVE-2024-23769 vulnerability was not recently discovered. On October 30, 2023, a third-party security personnel discovered this vulnerability and proactively reported and submitted it to Samsung.
As per industry norms, when a company receives a report of a security vulnerability and it’s confirmed, the vulnerability is not disclosed publicly until it is officially fixed. Now that Samsung has disclosed this vulnerability, it indicates that it has been officially fixed.
Samsung has recently released Samsung Magician Software version 8.0.1, which fixes this vulnerability, so there is no need to worry. If you are a Samsung SSD user, please go to the Samsung official website immediately to download the latest version of the management software, with an installation package of about 191MB. Please refer to the following image.
Finally, two additional points about this news:
- This vulnerability only exists in Windows operating systems. It does not affect users of Android and Apple operating systems. The latest version number of the Samsung Magician Software for Android and Apple operating systems is still 8.0.0.
- Samsung’s Samsung Magician Software is not only applicable to Samsung’s SSD products but also to other Samsung-manufactured USB drives and portable storage devices. Therefore, users of other Samsung products should also update their software to the latest version as soon as possible.
